Call to the Pen: Halloween Baseball Blog Post Extravaganza!

The most important thing is that this blog post features a reference to, and video of, the popular children’s film Hocus Pocus (1993), as well as an image of a man dressed as a lobster with a San Francisco Giants logo on its chest.

Today is Halloween! You probably already knew that. If you didn’t already know, I need to ask you how that’s even remotely possible. Aren’t you on a computer and also the internet and don’t you live in the age of information? To not be aware of Halloween on Halloween would take a dedicated and considered effort to avoid such things. I suppose you could object to Halloween on moral or religious grounds, which is just fine, that’s your right and you’re free to live your life however you like, but even then, to not know that October 31st is Halloween still strikes me as rather peculiar. Baseball. This is a baseball blog. You can tell because of the name of the blog and also because of the picture that accompanies this post. The picture features San Francisco Giants fans! The Giants are a baseball team and they won the World Series! In October! Their team colors are orange and black and that one guy is dressed up as a lobster! Halloween! Full circle, ya’ll. We made it, kind of.

This is a Good Baseball Inspired Halloween Costume

Bill Ripken CostumeHalloween was last night, but who cares, this is a  damn good baseball inspired Halloween costume and as such, it deserves a couple hundred words related to, or at the very least tangentially inspired by it.

We’ve been alerted to this Halloween costume by the usually-pretty-good and only-sometimes-really-annoying sports website Grantland, as part of their topical Halloween Costume Contest. There are actually some pretty good costumes that made the  cut over there. Walter White, the Coach Taylors, Kenny Powers—all very well done.

For our purposes, though, we’ll hone in on the costume that has been added to this post over on the top-right side of the screen. The one where the guy is dressed like Billy Ripken from the Fuck Face baseball card and also is wearing an actual fake baseball card, earning himself some very well deserved style points. And do not fret, we’ve been reassured that the swearing part was indeed translated over in execution of the costume.

There’s no two ways about it, combining the words Fuck and Face together is very humorous. This is the somewhat great reason why the original baseball card became the phenomenon it did. Other than that, I have no comment on the baseball card itself. The cursing is really the only notable feature. Perhaps Billy Ripken’s face is kind of interesting, a look in his eyes like he knows he’s getting away with something, or maybe the old cartoon bird hat is notable—but no, the Fuck Face is carrying this thing.

As for the costume. It’s wonderful. Great job by you, guy. It must have been a huge pain in the ass to navigate hallways in that thing, and going to the bathroom. Unless, you know, he took the card off in those situations and either carried it next to him or leaned it against the wall for a while.
